Clinical Psychologist - Dr Karin Adamson

Thank you for considering working with me. I understand that it can sometimes be difficult not only to take the first steps of acknowledging that you might need some form of help, but also to find the right therapist for you.

What I try to offer everyone I work with is a calm space to talk as openly as you want about what you are finding difficult at the moment, those ‘things’ which are having an impact on your ability to get on with your life in the way you want to.

Everyone’s experience affects them in different ways and there are never any judgements about what a person wants to work through because the reasons why you are considering therapy at this point are important to you.

I know it can be difficult to ask for help and especially to begin any therapeutic journey, so I try to offer people a calm and safe space in which to talk and work on whatever issues they may have.

However, it can be quite common that some people might not be sure of exactly what it is they need to focus on and can therefore feel stuck. I try to help people explore what these areas might be so we can then work through them together.

A little bit about me

Hi, I’m Karin, a clinical psychologist with over 17 years of experience working in the field of mental health in both the NHS and private practice. However, I have had an interest in working in mental health since leaving school. I found my passion for clinical psychology after working with some young adults who were experiencing their first episodes of mental health difficulties and seeing their journeys to recovery and finding their way in life again was inspirational to me. After qualifying as a clinical psychologist, I have worked with adults who have come with a diverse range of difficulties.

My desire to specialise in the field of trauma was developed after being lucky enough to work in the Lancashire Traumatic Stress Service and I began my EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing) training journey. My experience has shown me that there is no one approach that fits all, which is why I use an integrative approach that focuses on what is most important and causing distress for each individual client I work with.

Over the years I have become accredited as a Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) practitioner, and I continue to draw on this learning. I also became (and remain) accredited as a Cognitive Analytic Therapy (CAT) practitioner and alongside this I have trained and am now an accredited EMDR consultant.

As a psychologist, I offer individual clients forms of talking therapy. If you’ve never had ‘talking’ therapy before, you might be feeling nervous and worried. That’s completely understandable and it’s my job to help you overcome those feelings enough to enable you to speak freely and comfortably.
